Using an electrical current through wire to the workpiece, forming an arc. This creates the weld, joining two metal workpieces together. <\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"b4m3s-1-0\">However<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"b4m3s-2-0\">, unlike other arc welding processes such as MIG, the arc is &#8220;submerged&#8221; under a layer of flux.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Submerged arc welding applications.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"et8ht\" data-offset-key=\"askps-0-0\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"askps-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"askps-0-0\">Common in the welding of industrial cans and vessels, the saw welding process produces a strong, clean weld<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"askps-1-0\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-offset-key=\"askps-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"9gsc3-0-0\">Materials include carbon steels (low and medium), high-strength, low-alloy steels and nickel based alloys<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"9gsc3-1-0\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-offset-key=\"askps-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1i91f-0-0\">It&#8217;s an ideal process for heavy plate welding. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"1i91f-1-0\">As well as <a href=\"https:\/\/awo.aws.org\/glossary\/surfacing-weld\/\">surfacing applications<\/a> like weld overlay and hard facing of structural\/vulnerable metals<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"1i91f-2-0\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a sub arc welder?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"et8ht\" data-offset-key=\"efi57-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"efi57-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"efi57-0-0\">The process of submerged arc welding needs special equipment compared to other welding processes<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"efi57-1-0\">. A sub-arc welder needs to have a high duty cycle and output amperage to handle demand. Power sources are often in the region of 800 &#8211; 1200 amps! <\/span><\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"efi57-0-0\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"efi57-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"efi57-1-0\">You will also need a welding head\/torch holder to move along the workpiece and lay down the weld. Automatic submerged arc welding usually consists of a column and boom manipulator. As well as a welding tractor\/carriage. Manual SAW welding uses a power source and hand-held torch.<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"efi57-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9p1oa-0-0\">Finally, a flux hopper to distribute the flux over the weld bead is integral to SAW welding.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the function of flux in submerged arc welding?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"et8ht\" data-offset-key=\"dgeh0-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"dgeh0-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"dgeh0-0-0\">Flux <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"dgeh0-1-0\">is used<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"dgeh0-2-0\"> in submerged arc welding to provide a protective layer over the weld pool.
