Steel is used in and out of our homes, in fact almost everywhere you look, and for good reason. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You may be familiar with some, if not all, of the below:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vehicles \u2013 cars, trucks, SUVs, motorhomes, buses, trains. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Appliances \u2013 refrigerators, washing machines, ovens, dishwashers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Utensils \u2013 forks, spoons, knives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical \u2013 surgical stainless steel, implantable devices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Construction &#8211; commercial and residential<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agriculture \u2013 tractors, ploughs, combines, milking equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transportation \u2013 shipping, roads, buses, trains, container lorries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Power generation \u2013 generators, wire, transmission lines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infrastructure \u2013 roads, bridges, tunnels, water supply, sewers, grids<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>National Defence \u2013 armaments, military vehicles, and ships<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With all of this being made in steel, you can see why any industry that utilises the metal, will require the services of a steel fabricator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So why is steel one of the most popular materials?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the materials versatility, strength, quality and overall value, it is in use in so many industries like construction and manufacturing. This is mainly since the introduction of high-tech 3D computer software with the latest and greatest technology. It allows monitoring and controlling of delicate pieces of equipment like <a class=\"aioseop-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westermans.com\/hyperthermplasma.aspx\">hydefinition plasma cutters<\/a>, laser cutters, routers and welders. 3D modelling has made it much easier to digitise and visualise the final product, and can help to avoid costly errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the most common fabrication processes?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cutting<\/strong>.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A section of steel that has been cut prior to fabrication is much easier to work with compared to one that hasn\u2019t. Steel cutting for fabrication can be done using a variety of techniques, including \u2013 <a class=\"aioseop-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westermans.com\/profilecutting.aspx\">flame cutting<\/a>, circular saws and plasma cutting. It can be either a manual hand cut or using a <a class=\"aioseop-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westermans.com\/plasmacutters.aspx\">CNC mechanised cutting table<\/a> often referred to as a profile cutting table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Welding<\/strong>.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This technique is used a lot in the process of steel fabrication, when both attaching steel fittings and fixtures, as well as preparing connections that are going to be installed. This technique of fabrication melts the primary material, as well as what the material is being attached to with extremely high heat. For example, press braking may be used for more straightforward bends where steel lengths can be as long as 3 metres. On the other hand, steel may have to be passed through a series of bending rolls several times, until the exact level of curve has been achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common job titles in steel fabrication<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Welders, solderers, cutters, and brazers use <a class=\"aioseop-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westermans.com\/weldingmachines.aspx\">equipment<\/a> to cut and join metal parts. Most of these positions require some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twi-global.com\/technical-knowledge\">technical education<\/a> through high school courses, vocational schools, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mgts.co.uk\">community colleges<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weldability-sif.com\/foundation\/\">similar programs<\/a>.
