The customer
Specialised Motorsport Engineering (SME) is a fabrication and engineering start-up based near Cologne, Germany, a short drive from the Nürburgring. Founded by English-born Chris Chadwick, who built his experience across WRC, LMP and Euro Pro Mod before settling in Germany after a spell with Toyota Motorsport. SME manufactures custom motorsport parts including body shells, wishbones and subframes, coolers, water pipes, exhaust collectors and full exhaust systems, and roll cages. Using CAD facilities and a Romer Coordinate Measuring Machine arm, SME delivers parts to tight tolerances with full inspection reporting.
The challenge
- Hard-to-find equipment: SME needed a specific Miller Dynasty unit that was proving difficult to source elsewhere in the world
- Demanding, multi-material welding: day-to-day work spans aluminium, Inconel, stainless steel and titanium
