Specialised Motorsport Engineering (SME) is a motorsport fabrication start-up based near Germany's Nürburgring, producing custom parts, from body shells and subframes to exhaust systems, for racing teams across WRC, LMP and other top-flight series. When SME struggled to source a specific Miller Dynasty TIG welder elsewhere in the world, Westermans supplied it, catching and fixing a fault before it ever reached Germany.
The customer
Specialised Motorsport Engineering (SME) is a fabrication and engineering start-up based near Cologne, Germany, a short drive from the Nürburgring. Founded by English-born Chris Chadwick, who built his experience across WRC, LMP and Euro Pro Mod before settling in Germany after a spell with Toyota Motorsport. SME manufactures custom motorsport parts including body shells, wishbones and subframes, coolers, water pipes, exhaust collectors and full exhaust systems, and roll cages. Using CAD facilities and a Romer Coordinate Measuring Machine arm, SME delivers parts to tight tolerances with full inspection reporting.The challenge
