Customer case study

Walkers Shortbread: A Siegmund Welding Table for an In-House Maintenance Workshop

How a nearly new Siegmund welding table gave a busy food factory workshop premium fixturing at a second-hand price.

Walkers’ Speyside maintenance team keeps shortbread production running. They wanted a Siegmund table to clamp and set up parts before TIG welding, without paying new-table prices.

The customer

Walkers Shortbread Ltd is a family baker based in Speyside, Scotland, that has been making shortbread since 1898. Its products are known worldwide, and the brand is built on Scottish provenance and heritage.

Alan McTavish is the Maintenance Manager at the Speyside factory. He runs the in-house maintenance workshop, which is a fully equipped machine shop with a welding and fabrication area and a separate clean area for reassembly after repairs and refurbishments.

The challenge

Keep production running: The workshop repairs and refurbishes production equipment in-house, so line downtime is dependent on how quickly the team can turn jobs around.
Accurate set-up before welding: Alan needed a solid surface to assemble and clamp parts and small fabrications before TIG welding.
A premium table on a workshop budget: He wanted a Siegmund table, but a new one would normally be out of budget for this kind of equipment.
Confidence buying used: A used table had to be in good condition, so that it would be accurate and ready to use as soon as it arrived.

Westermans reccomendation

Equipment Supplied:

  • Siegmund 1m x 1m Matrix hole welding table, used, in as-new condition
“Siegmund tables are built to last, which is why a good used one is such a smart buy. Alan got the same flatness, clamping system and accuracy as a new table, for a fraction of the cost. For a maintenance workshop doing varied repair and fabrication work, it’s one of the most useful bits of kit you can have.”
- Craig Westerman, Sales Director at Westermans International

The outcome

  • Condition as described. The table arrived in new condition, exactly as listed on the Westermans website.
  • Budget stretched further. Alan got a brand-new-quality table at a second-hand price.
  • Easy buying process. Communication was prompt and straightforward from enquiry to delivery.
  • Better-equipped workshop. The fabrication area now has a dedicated surface for assembling and clamping before TIG welding.
“Communications with Westermans were excellent and prompt and very easy to deal with. I am delighted with our new-to-us welding table, which is in new condition as was described on the Westermans website. I basically have a brand-new welding table for a second-hand price, which enabled me to purchase something that would normally be out of my budget for this type of equipment.”
- Alan McTavish

Why this setup worked

In-house maintenance teams in food production need reliable, accurate equipment, and the budget has to be justified. Siegmund tables hold their flatness and value for years, so a well-kept used one performs like new. Westermans checks and describes used stock accurately, enabling Walkers to buy with confidence, and the workshop got the fixturing required without paying full new-table prices.
