F J Edwards English Wheel Metal Wheeling Machine

- This FJ Edwards English Wheel metalworking tool is used to form compound (double curvature) curves from flat sheets of metal such as aluminium or steel.
- It works by surface stretching and is related to panel beating processes and for shaping sheet metal, putting curves in two or more directions.
- The machine is shaped like a large, closed letter "C" and consists of two wheels: the rolling wheel and the anvil wheel.
- F G Edwards is the Rolls Royce of English wheels, the extremely sturdy cast frame means there is little if any distortion when applying the load required to shape the panel.
- The machine is shaped like a large, closed letter "C" and consists of two wheels: the rolling wheel and the anvil wheel.
- The anvil wheel usually has a smaller radius than the rolling wheel, and the pressure between the wheels changes as the material becomes thinner.
- This pressure is adjusted to compensate as the material thins, allowing for the production of different panels using the same machine.
- Wheeling machines are particularly useful in low-volume sports car production, where more easily formed aluminium alloy is used.
- They are also used in coachbuilding, car restoration, and spaceframe chassis racing cars that meet regulations that require sheetmetal panels resembling mass production vehicles.
- With this Wheeling machine, a skilled operative could make complete panels.
- Previously owned by a vehicle restoration company who used the machine for shaping repair panels.
