MIG Welders

MIG welding, or Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), is a welding process where a continuously fed consumable wire electrode is melted and used as a filler material to join two metal pieces.

A MIG welder produces an electric arc via a CV (constant voltage) power source supply. This arc is used to fuse the base material, and filler metal that is constantly fed through the welding torch during operation, producing the weld bead.

MIG welding is used for a large variety of applications throughout the welding industry. From the automotive industry and construction, to vessel fabrication and pipe welding. It’s suitability for welding thick materials efficiently, lends itself to demanding production environments.

Yes, you can use MIG welders to weld stainless steel, however it is more challenging than welding mild steel. Heat control is essential, as well as taking care to ensure correct wire and shielding gas selection. You will also need to note the right settings for your machine from the operator manual.

Yes you can weld aluminium with a standard MIG welder. You will need the right set up on the machine, as well as employ the right technique. The material should be no thinner than 14 gauge, and thoroughly cleaned prior to welding. A shielding gas that is 100% argon will be required, and the filler metal should be suitable for the alloy of your base aluminium (usually ER4043 and ER5356). The desired process of applying the weld is the  "spray transfer" method.

The main differences between MIG welders and arc welders is that MIG welders are faster and more efficient, producing less spatter. However arc welding is a versatile method for welding thick material. MIG welders are easier to use than arc welders.

You can MIG weld without gas, it’s known as gasless or flux cored welding. However, you need to use a flux-cored filler wire, not standard MIG wire, and a MIG welder with flux cored capabilities. This process is largely preferred in outdoor conditions where external factors like wind can affect the shielding gas.
